Remember, a flower garden is a work in progress that should get better every year.
Mixing It Up
The first thing that you really need to know about flower garden design is that you should not isolate your perennials into their own flowerbed. You really are going to want to use them to plant a "mixed border." Allow your small flowering trees and shrubs to join in with these flowers to create a satisfying arrangement, which will look good all season long. Of course, this is more realistic if you have a small piece of property and not a large space for your beds of shrubs and flowers.
Second, Go Wide
Secondly, you need to know that when it comes to flower bed size, wider is better. You should never be meager on the width of your flower beds. Otherwise you are not going to be able to add flowering shrubs and graceful flowering trees. For this reason, you should make sure that your flower bed is at least 5 to 6 feet wide. Wide flower beds will be a lot more attractive and give you many more opportunities to create that lush, layered look that you are seeking.
Have A Focal Point
While all of these things are important for your flower garden design, you really cannot afford to forget to create a focal point. Have you ever noticed that the most appealing flower garden designs are those that actually include accents that catch your eye. Some of the wonderful things that you can use for a focal point in your garden include a an arbor, bench, a gate, art or statue. If you happen to have a large garden, then your garden will be able to have room for more than one focal point. However, with a small flower garden you should work on creating a special accent for the entrance. Typically, a gate through an arbor is most often used.
Finally- Repetition, Balance and Symmetry
A number of other things that you should keep in mind are creating a good line, which means that you are going to need to know just how tall each of your plants are expected to grow. You will also need to give each plant enough space with this information in mind. A number of the other things that you should use are repetition, balance and symmetry. When you keep all of these considerations in mind, you will have a beautiful flower garden design that you can be proud of.
